INTRODUCTION

If you measure the wrong thing, you'll improve the wrong thing.

Most maintenance organisations drown in KPIs and starve for insight. Book 6 builds the APM framework — leading and lagging indicators, OEE three-tier framework, the hierarchy of measurement (work-pack to executive), and the leading-vs-lagging "twin lenses" that connect cause to effect.

Plus role-specific KPI cascades so every person on your team knows which numbers they own. The companion Engineering KPIs Reference Guide (sold separately) provides formulae and benchmarks for thirty-five additional metrics.

CHAPTER 1

Chapter 1 · Why Performance Management Matters

Every industrial operation already measures something. Tonnages, downtime hours, maintenance spend, headcount — the data flows. The problem is rarely a shortage of data. The problem is that the data does not change behavior, does not surface problems early enough, and does not connect operational action to business outcome.

Performance Management is the discipline that closes that gap. Done well, it converts a flood of operational data into a small number of decisions made at the right level of the organization, at the right cadence, with the right authority to act.

Consider a mid-sized process plant with USD 80 million in annual revenue and an OEE score of 65%. Industry research consistently places world-class OEE at roughly 85% and the average plant between 60% and 75%. Each percentage point of OEE in this plant translates to roughly USD 800,000 in annual revenue. The cost of a broken APM system is rarely small.

What you'll learn

  • The KPI framework — leading + lagging, by level (executive, tactical, operational)
  • OEE measurement — the three-tier framework (asset, line, plant)
  • PM compliance — why most plants measure it wrong
  • MTBF, MTTR, and reliability metrics — Weibull analysis for industrial assets
  • The hierarchy of measurement — work-pack to executive aggregation
  • The twin lenses — actual vs theoretical performance
